Faith-Based Initiatives

Religion is often treated as a matter of personal belief alone. In practice, however, religion is a social determinant of health. It is a structural force that shapes health and well-being.

Through our work as Pride in the Pews, the name we began under, where these dynamics were most visible within faith institutions. Faith informs the way LGBTQ+ communities relate to their bodies and the world around them, and it has the power to support holistic health or contribute to harm, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.

Through that work and years of working alongside faith communities, we are clear that religion must be understood as a social determinant of health and recognized as a structural force shaping the lives of LGBTQ+ communities. We remain committed to equipping faith institutions and moving them toward becoming Advocating Institutions.
