Faith-Based Initiatives
Religion is often treated as a matter of personal belief alone. In practice, however, religion is a social determinant of health. It is a structural force that shapes health and well-being.
Through our work as Pride in the Pews—the name we began under—we saw how stigma, silence, and harmful theology within faith institutions shape the lives of Black LGBTQ+ communities. Faith influences how LGBTQ+ people relate to their bodies and the world around them. It has the power to support holistic health or contribute to harm, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. We remain committed to equipping faith institutions and moving them toward becoming Advocating Institutions.
